It was apple week at our house this week!
We learned all about apples, and celebrated Johnny Appleseed's birthday on Tuesday the 26th. (He would have been 234 years old. We ate apple pie instead of cake, but we thought we had better not try for 234 candles!) We did apple math of all kinds, counting seeds in apples for pie, cutting the apples and the pies into fractions, measuring and problem solving with apple recipes of all kinds.
We learned about how apple trees need a certain amount of cold each year to grow, so we did apple geography- looking at places where apples can and cannot grow.
We took a tour at Tuttle's Orchard, and saw how they process and store their apples, as well as checking out the cider making. (and tasting!) Then we went to pick some of our own apples of course. : ) Not long after we got home it started to rain- perfect timing!
We learned about how apple trees need bees to turn their flowers into apples.
We discussed how long until our new apple trees in our back yard will make apples. We discussed how many varieties of apples there are in the world, and how apples are an ancient food.
We talked about Johny Appleseed, and what a tall tale is!
We hosted K's book club this week, and read an apple book, and made individual apple pies!
Phew.
You'd think we are all appled out, but there are a few things we didn't get to, so Apple Week is going to be more like apple 10 days. (Or so)
