K with Zoë Martin-Doike

A moment of hero-worship is what this was....
We went to the Symphony with friends on Wednesday evening, and it was such a fun night! Every year (for the last 16 years) the Indianapolis Symphony hosts a "Side by Side" concert- high school students from all over Indiana compete for a chance to play side by side with their counterparts from the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. The students study and recieve coaching from members of the orchestra for 3 months, and then they hold a concert at the Hilbert Theatre. Every year there is an auditioned solo opportunity, and this year it was filled by a homeschooling high-schooler named Zoe from Bloomington. Her solo performance of Vieuxtemps Concerto No. 5 in A Minor was beautiful. (There was a minor technicality with her dress which K never noticed.) Zoe began studying the violin when she was 5, just like K. K was transfixed, and I promised that if there was an opportunity to go get her autograph after the performance, that we would. And here is the photo of that moment!
We studied the pieces before we heard them performed this evening, and I think it added a little meaning for K. I love sharing music with her, and I loved this moment- of K having a personal hero to look up to.

He has been feeling under the weather, and not able to shake these germs entirely. I am crossing my fingers that one more good long night of sleep will help.
On the bright side- no one else in the family seems to have suffered.

When things don't work out......

Papyrus?
Originally uploaded by annamaren.

We have had a lot of fun preparing to make this papyrus.... we have soaked the strips, rinsed, rolled, soaked and stripped. We have followed directions. And still- our papyrus, it leaves us wondering.
If we were really, truly scribes in ancient Egypt we would have been fired by now, since our skills are sorely lacking.
The great thing is though, that K doesn't really care so much that our attempt at papyrus making has failed so far. It was all about the process for her, about learning where the stuff grows, why they didn't have any other kind of paper, why this stuff was so important. We had fun and we tried, and it's only me who seems so frustrated about the end result.
I think there is a lesson about this for all of us!
Oh well!

No Child Left Indoors
http://www.orionmagazine.org/pages/om/07-2om/Louv.html

Here's an article, (it's an old article, but it hits all the points) that is making me happy about being outside in the cold spring weather.
It snowed last night, and there was still some on the ground this afternoon. We changed out of church clothes and went and made the last snow angels of the season, and observed the last animal tracks in the snow.
Next comes the season of slosh!
