Kindling (Archived Kindling)

Here is the kindling currently fueling our learning...... (starting with the "Theme" we are currently working on, ending with the "day to day" stuff)

What's Inside my Body? We are exploring what is inside of us. We are working on a unit of learning about the systems that make up our bodies

Bees! We began this unit when Rob bought the hive inside to put it together! We will be painting it and setting it in it's place in the backyard, and getting the bees in April. In the interim we are going to learn all about bees- K's KWL chart wondered how *do* the bees make that honey? (It will been interesting to contrast with Maple Syrup, after we took the Maple Syrup workshop with WellSpring.)

Math U See is our Math program that K is working through. We have started with Primer. We don't do all the worksheets for each chapter, as they are intense with the repetition. K enjoys watching the DVD with each chapter, and the strong hands on content.

Journaling K writes a little about each day in her personal journal. This is personal refelction time for her, and a chance to practise her handwriting and composition skills. She writes in botany books, so there is a chance to illustrate each day too. We keep every journal.

Greek and Latin We are using English from the Roots Up as we begin Greek and Latin. I didn't think K would be interested yet, but she expressed a huge interest when she saw what I was looking at, and we have had a few etymology discussions as different words have been discovered in what K is reading, so here goes! We learn a new word every few days.

Word Wall We have a spelling word wall in the kitchen nook, where we put up a new word every few days. I choose words from an age appropriate word list, and also take misspelled words from her journal entries. As she gains confidence, we take them down. We don't do particular "spelling time", but I encourage her to refer to the word wall when she asks about spelling during other writing activities we do.

Violin K takes Violin lessons on campus at Butler University. She began in the fall of 2005, after a loong time of wanting lessons. We are doing a Suzuki method, but we will start an introduction to reading music earlier than the usual Suzuki style.

Step into Handwriting is the first book from a Queensland (Australia) Curriculum introducing handwriting. K gets more practice than she realises in practical ways, like writing me grocery lists, writing me reminder notes, etc etc. Still it's helpful to reinforce the correct letter formation as a reminder now and then.

Spanish K is doing a Spanish class through WellSpring. I wish I had more of a background in Spanish, I am learning alongside K.

Reading K is reading chapter books, we include time at the library at least twice a week. She is invloved in a participant-led Book Club which meets weekly.

Art We are doing AlphaArt with the same girl tribe that is doing the Book Club together. Justyn tacks it onto the end of BookClub time together.

Girl Scouts K is a Brownie Girl Scout, with a troop of homeschooling girls from the FLT circle.
